Nurturing Atmosphere, Individualized Plans

Oak Street Services provides a home with services for people 16 years or older who, because of their developmental disabilities, are not able to live independently in the community.

Our residential Oak Street Services are set in an established neighborhood. Clients live in houses with individual bedrooms, bathrooms and common spaces typical of a family home: living room, kitchen, dining area, laundry room and an “extra room” for exercise, games, crafts or hobbies, sensory equipment and activities. Each of our five houses provides a home to six people with supervision. Clients live in a safe, nurturing atmosphere that emphasizes continuous learning and individualized growth.

We believe that all people need to live their own, best lives. In order to do this, we work with each person to develop a tailored support plan based on his or her wants, needs and dreams.

Tools, Choice and Growth

Our community-based living option provides residential services in multiple homes in Northfield. Each of the homes has 24-hour staffing, providing people with developmental disabilities the support, training and assistance they need to live as independently as possible.

Knowledgeable staff members help clients grow and develop at their own rate in a safe, nurturing and challenging environment. The focus is on continued improvement accomplished through personal learning programs, with the goal of teaching clients the tools they need to interact with and live capably in the larger community.

Through our personal learning programs we work with each client to create a tailored support plan based on his or her wants, needs and dreams. Our philosophy is that each client should have as much control and choice as possible, and we support people in their decision making and encourage new growth opportunities.

Line of Business

Bringing the Power of Possibility to People with Special Needs

Laura Baker Services Association is a superior provider of housing, educational and support services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Our mission is to respect the life choices and dreams of people with developmental disabilities and help them reach their goals.  Understanding that the needs of each individual are unique, we empower families to choose from a continuum of care that will support their loved ones in leading fulfilling lives.

Our Philosophy of Support

  • All people need to live their own, best lives. We support individuals with developmental disabilities to live the life they want. They don’t need pity. They need hope, expert support and a world that gives them a chance. Attitude matters: The way we think about disabilities creates opportunities – not obstacles.
  • We implement individualized care plans that emphasize continuous learning and growth based on each person’s wants, needs and dreams. Individuals work with their team to design their own goals.
  • We recognize the importance of family involvement and value the nourishing power of friendships.

Our Legacy

Miss Laura Baker founded her residential school in 1897, dedicated to the idea that people with disabilities could thrive as educated, contributing members of society. Miss Baker’s vision continues to guide our mission: To respect the life choices and dreams of people with developmental disabilities and help them reach their goals.

  • We provide seamless support and services throughout a lifetime, regardless of the type or severity of disability.
  • We do not discontinue service to people when difficult problems arise.
  • We are recognized as leaders in serving high-need individuals, including those with Prader-Willi Syndrome.
  • We are proud of our reputation for effectively working with people with a dual diagnosis of developmental disabilities and mental illness, and our success working with people who have a history of abuse.
  • We foster the feeling of home. Our staff treat clients like family and we cultivate an open environment that invites individuals to interact with others as they choose.
